Joint Advising Support

The Applied Math Program at UIUC would like to encourage joint advising of graduate students. The program will fund up to four 25% Research Assistant appointments for the Fall of 2006 for graduate students who have one advisor in mathematics and one advisor in another department.

Requests for funding should be made to applied_funds@math.uiuc.edu The deadline for such requests is July 3rd.

The request (in .pdf format) should include:

  • Statements from two faculty members (one in mathematics, one in another department) confirming their advising status.
  • A CV of the applicant
  • A description (up to 3 pages) of the research project of the student.
  • The description should describe how the research contributes both to mathematics and another discipline.

We hope that this program will also give students who would otherwise be supported by a teaching assistantship some extra time to understand the connections between mathematics and other disciplines. This appointment can be held in conjunction with regular TA or RA 25%-time appointments.
